South African Printmakers   June 9th, 2011

The South African art world is relatively small and the market grapples with the nature of the economy of the country, which is a combination of the developed and developing world. Artists of the caliber of William Kentridge and an illiterate sculptor living on the border of the Kruger Park both call the country home. It is against this backdrop that South African printmakers work and have over the past few decades opened studios and workshops to meet their own and other artists needs.

South African Printmakers come from three backgrounds. Some artists will specialize in printmaking while they are studying and will go on to set up studios that cater for their own needs. John Moore is an example of this as he does all of his woodblock printing himself. Other South African Printmakers can be found affiliated to “public” institutions such as universities, Technikon and community arts studios. These organizations are funded and do not have to rely on the services that they provide for an income. Examples of these South African printmakers would be Kim Berman at the Witwatersrand Technikon, The Michaelis Art School Printmaking department headed by Stephen Inggs and the Artists’ Proof Studio in Newtown, Johannesburg.

Finally there are the “private” South African Printmakers who rely on the work that they produce to sustain their printmaking activities. The Artists’ Press in White River (www.artprintsa.com), The Piglet Press in Johannesburg and Hard Ground Printmakers Workshop in Cape Town are all examples of this group. The media that they work in depends on the expertise and field of interest of the master printers who run the workshops.

In the past the identity of South African printmakers tended to be tied up in the world of linocuts and woodblock prints. This medium has developed the reputation of being a particularly African way of doing prints. From Cecil Skotnes and Dan Rakgoathe to Sandile Goje South African printmakers have mastered these techniques. Woodblock and lino cut printing is a relatively accessible way to make prints and can be done with a minimum of materials and equipment. It also lends itself well to the tradition of carving in Southern African Art.

Contemporary South African printmakers and workshops are able to offer artists and collectors work in the full variety of printmaking techniques from computer generated Iris prints to collographs, lithographs and letterpress. This variety in media is apparent in the range of work currently available from South African printmakers.

Orlando Theme Park Capital   June 1st, 2011

Although probably the theme park capital of the world, a vacation in Orlando, Florida does not mean these are the only attractions to keep visitors amused. In fact, Orlando has such a diversity of attractions that many travel books have been written just about this one location alone. Everything a visitor could possibly want is here and the reason why people return year after year.

As one of the most tourist centered cities in the world, Orlando a great deal to offer including large shopping malls, restaurants of every type, night clubs, bars and many specialist shops. Besides the major theme parks, a vacation in Orlando can offer so many attractions to spark the imagination that it’s hard to know where to begin.

To start, there is the Central Florida Zoo which draws huge crowds all year round and has over four hundred animals there although it is was only granted this status in 1975. Privately owned, this zoo is also a botanical garden run by a charitable group whose purpose is to protect native and endangered species around the world.

Then there are the works of Louis Tiffany whose famous collection is housed here in the Morse Museum of American Art. The famous chapel interior commissioned for the World’s Columbian Exhibition back in 1893 is also here along with many items of Tiffany jewelry, leaded glass, ornaments and clayware.

Whilst Orlando may appear on the surface to be a town designed for the entertainment of children that could not be farther from the truth with adults equally well looked after. There is also plenty to do in the evening when you take an Orlando vacation with family shows like the Pirates adventure or for adults, Disney’s Pleasure Island and Universals city walk.

Another popular attraction is the Orlando Science Center and is in fact one of the largest buildings of its type allowing the visitor access to ten huge exhibition halls. If your preference is in railways then the International Trolley and Train Museum on International drive will be a pleasant surprise with 14 trains running continuously and three waterfalls in a space of about 4,000 square feet.

If you have seen the Titanic-ship of Dreams film then you will enjoy the exhibition along International Drive that tells the story using large sets and depictions from the ship as a background. Lake Eola Park on the other hand has a pleasant 43 acres to stroll around and relax or perhaps a little boating on the lake.

However, there aren’t that many visitors who visit Orlando without a trip to one of the four main Disney theme parks or the equally impressive Universal studios; where a person’s age really doesn’t matter. If you have never vacationed in Orlando before, you must try it at least once; it doesn’t really matter when you go, however holiday seasons do get busy, especially Christmas; well, who wouldn’t want to spend Christmas with Mickey.
